A triggered memory that turned into a meditation on the significance of insignificant objects.

ORNAMENTS

Each Christmas Eve / when I was a boy / old dusty boxes appeared
down from the attic / hidden away / forgotten for almost a year
metal and glass / in swaddling clothes / tissued-treasures each one
Unwrapping to find / what's hidden behind was / more often half of the fun

Each ornament hung / on a branch of the tree / held a memory ripe to be shared
Someone had thought / enough of us then / to demonstrate they truly cared
Somehow was woven / into every one / the thread of familial love
That lived through two wars / & life's open doors / to a future they barely dreamed of

One moment of wonder can turn bleak despair into dreams
A light in the darkness can make all the difference it seems
One simple tradition that resonates now,
like trinkets that turn into treasures somehow
Nuggets of wisdom that flow through our family tree
is the reason the ornaments hold so much meaning for me

Is there more to that moment? / A meaning in memory / a lesson in truth to be learned
Are ornaments all we're / supposed to hand down / or a costly experience hard-earned/
The truth is we need / both the light and the shadow / to make this life full and complete
Our day to day story / with its moments of glory /offsets momentary defeat
